Surf’s Up

The following post features student writing.

¡Hola amigos!

Today we woke up and quickly gathered our bags and ate breakfast at the hotel. We had the option of pancakes, a typical Tico breakfast of rice and beans with toast, or eggs. Then we were brought to the beach for our surf lessons.

Yesterday’s losers of the “odds game” ended up swapping clothing and #twinning!

El Hombre Grande, in his natural habitat.

“Surfer dudes” taught us all how to surf safely while still having a blast. We split into two groups, which alternated in and out of the Pacific in 20-minute shifts. The water was warm and the waves were good. The majority of us were able to catch a wave and stand up on our surfboards at least once (in the three hour lesson:) ) and we all had loads of fun! During our breaks, our friendly surfing instructors offered us cold water and pineapple, which made us feel like we were having a true Tico experience.

Ally got up on her board on her first try and was…excited, to say the least.

Putney Surf Squad!

After finishing our time at the beach, we changed out of our salty attire back at the hotel and went souvenir/snack shopping. For lunch, we went to an amazing pizza place overlooking the deep green coast and crystal blue water called La Lambretta. We were all thrilled to have pizza, which was delicious, even by New York (and German) standards!

We then left on our journey back to Biolley for the last time :(. Surfing in the sun was very exhausting so we all took cat naps on the bus ride home while also enjoying the view of the hills at sunset. When we arrived back, dinner was waiting for us, a tomato and beef stew, rice, and green papaya picadillo. We then unpacked our belongings, showered off our many pounds of sand and salt from surfing, and headed to bed.

We can’t wait to see what our last week of community service work in Biolley has in store for us!

We are sad to be leaving this enchanting community so soon.

Besos,

Maya? & Alex?
