It’s Raining and We Need Our Pancho!

¡Hola familia!

Today started off like any normal day. We woke up at 6:30 and ate eggs and rice and beans for breakfast. Instead of going to work, we went on a hike through La Parque Internacional de La Amistad. After a 30-minute ride, we arrived at the park and looked around the visitor center. We were fortunate enough to have one of the employees of ASOMOBI, Victor, guide us on our hike.

The hike was very beautiful and gave us an opportunity to see a new part of the country. We saw toucans, heard scarlet macaws, and saw many big, scary bugs. It was a very nice break from work and a great way to connect with the nature surrounding us. After the hike, we learned about the history and geography of the national park.

After our first hike, we embarked on a second journey to the house of Pancho, a local artist. The hike, which started out very peacefully, ended up being quite the adventure — Costa Rican storms rolled in and the rain continued for the rest of the day. We took a shortcut to get to the house of our new friend Pancho. He took us under a fence and through lots of mud, but we all made it to Pancho’s house in one piece.

Once we got there, we enjoyed a lunch of peanut butter and jelly or tuna salad sandwiches. We then went to visit Pancho’s artisan project, his house. His house is made entirely of recycled materials, which he has put together himself. We tried cacao beans, warmed up by the fire, played with his homemade musical instruments, and explored his home. He showed us some of his new inventions and explained to us that the house is a 15-year work in progress.  After we explored some more, we left his house and went to the local heladería to enjoy some ice cream.

When we got back, we all took long, hot showers. For dinner we had meat, rice, and string picadillo (Cierra and Victoria helped make it). After dinner we relaxed, played cards, and got ready for another day of work.

XOXO,
